Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) and Reykjavik Energy in cooperation
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) and Reykjavik Energy (Orkuveita Reykjavikur: OR), a geothermal electricity producer and multi-utility provider in Iceland, have agreed on joining forces in the development of geothermal energy opportunities globally. Guðlaugur Sverrisson, Chairman of OR, Hjorleifur B. Kvaran, the Icelandic company's CEO, and Ichiro Fukue, Senior Executive Vice President of MHI, today signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in Tokyo.

Iceland Drilling Company signs its biggest agreement to date on geothermal drilling in the Azores

Iceland Drilling (UK) Ltd, a subsidiary of the Icelandic firm Jarðboranir hf., has signed a contract with two Azorean energy companies, Sogeo and GeoTerceira, for drilling exploration and production holes at high-temperature fields in the Azores Islands. The purpose of these holes is to generate electricity, and the Iceland Drilling agreement is by far the largest of this sort that has ever been concluded for the region involved. The agreement entails two interrelated projects for Sogeo and Geoterceira, both to be carried out on the Azorean islands of São Miguel and Terceira. In total, the agreement is worth up to ISK 1.8 billion [USD 15 million / EUR 12 million, with due reservations as to fluctuating exchange rates]. Most of the energy is expected to be used for electricity production for the islands.

Temporary Suspension of Drilling Activity in Mauerstetten

Hekla Energy GmbH, a subsidiary of Iceland Drilling, has successfully drilled a geothermal well in Mauerstetten (GT 1) to 4545 meters. The borehole temperature of 153°C was evidenced.
The next step is to evaluate the productivity of the well, which could take up to 2 months, but the ultimate purpose of the project is to create a high efficiency electricity generation plant.

One of the most challenging drilling projects in the world : Iceland Drilling to undertake deep drilling in northern Iceland

Landsvirkjun, on behalf of the Icelandic Deep Drilling Project (IDDP), and Iceland Drilling have signed a project contract for drilling activities in the Krafla area of northern Iceland, marking the beginning of deep drilling in high temperature geothermal areas. Since this is the first deep borehole of its kind the project is unique on a worldwide level. Scientists from around the world will be watching the project with interest and a number of domestic and foreign specialists will be involved in the research. The drilling is expected to be concluded in 2009.
